The January/February period brings two eclipses, a super moon, a moon wobble and a Mercury retrograde cycle. An Aquarian theme will predominate, with Jupiter and a host of other planets entering this innovative air sign.
On January 5, Jupiter enters Aquarius, joining Mercury, Neptune, Chiron and the North Node. This year-long cycle will bring more emphasis on freedom of expression, altruism, inventions, technology and social networking, especially on the Internet. We will see less focus on competition and more on adopting win/win solutions that bring long-term benefits to all concerned. Since Jupiter in Aquarius will be in mutual reception with Uranus in Pisces (each is in the other's ruling sign), we can expect an increase in altered reality sightings and experiences, such as seeing auras, UFOs, shadow people, orbs, etc.
In early January we are still under the New Moon in Capricorn period that began on December 27. The January 10 Full Moon, at 21 degrees of Cancer, is the first of five super moons in 2009. These super moons increase the probability of earth changes, heavy weather patterns, and emotional/psychic fluctuations. Those with high sensitivity will pick up the currents of change more strongly during this period. The Capricorn/Cancer focus suggests that it is a good time to reflect on the relationship between one's inner and outer sense of security. The favorable alignment of Saturn and Uranus to this lunation brings stability, creativity and the intuitive awareness to allow us to make beneficial life changes. Cancer themes for this period include the home, family, food and diet, daily habits, feelings and nurturing.
Mercury, the planet of communication, turns retrograde on January 11 at 8 degrees of Aquarius. This is a powerful station, as it occurs the day after the Full Moon and is conjunct the upcoming Solar Eclipse on January 25. Mercury will retrograde through the signs of Aquarius and Capricorn, until it turns direct on January 31. This three-week period is favorable for reviewing patterns connected with how we communicate and live our ideals, as well as how we cooperate with others (Aquarius). We can also plan the practical steps to take later towards manifesting our goals (Capricorn). As usual, it is best to avoid making major decisions or signing contracts during this retrograde period.
On January 25, a New Moon Solar Eclipse occurs at 7 Aquarius. This eclipse is aligned with Jupiter, which brings optimism and expansion of Aquarian themes, such as equality, diversity and innovation. An alignment with the asteroid Juno will encourage the beginning of partnerships with these themes. This eclipse will strongly affect those with planets at 2-12 degrees in the fixed signs of Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius. It is important to note where eclipses fall in one's chart as they can signal important periods of life transitions, especially if they are aligned with personal planets. The house position where this axis falls also indicates important life themes over the next six months. (See my special below.)
The inauguration of our new US president on January 20 is also aligned with this eclipse. Barack Obama is a Leo with Aquarius rising. He has already made the Aquarian focus on change and reform the keynotes of his presidency, and also successfully used the Internet and a teamwork approach in both his campaign and transition period. The co-ruler of Aquarius is Saturn, which reminds us that much coordinated effort will be needed to actualize the reforms and goals. Obama's ascendant will align with the February Full Moon Eclipse.
A moon wobble will occur on January 29, making the last half of the month a time of heightened emotions. These currents will be felt between January 20 and February 2. On January 28, the sun aligns with the north node in Aquarius, which brings opportunities for growth in relationships and important new connections. On January 31, Mercury turns direct and we can move forward again with our plans and goals.
The second Saturn/Uranus opposition, at 21 Virgo/Pisces, occurs on February 5. Since this aspect squares the powerful December Full Moon and occurs between eclipses, it may serve as a trigger point for significant world events. At this time we are more receptive to dreams and visions, especially as they relate to the broader world scene and our own role within it. It is a good time to ask for guidance on how to actualize one's unique talents in the world.
On February 9, the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse occurs at 21 Leo. This eclipse has challenging aspects with both Neptune and Uranus, which increases the occurrence of illusion, deception and the need for sudden adjustments. Leo themes include leadership, creativity, confidence, recreation and play, generosity and risk-taking. This lunar eclipse will activate planets in the middle to late degrees of fixed signs.
The middle of February features an alignment of the North Node of the moon with Jupiter and Mars from Feb. 14-17 and then with Mercury on Feb. 22, all at 9 degrees of Aquarius. This will be a favorable time for beginning new relationships of all types and also receiving opportunities through others. We feel more energized, confident and assertive at this time. Beneficial contacts between Venus, Mars and Jupiter also heighten the prospects for romance and good networking/social events. The Mercury, North Node and Jupiter alignment favors communications that lead to significant events and alliances.
The New Moon occurs on February 24 at 6 Pisces 35. A harmonious aspect with Pluto will bring opportunities to deepen our connections with others by cultivating more sensitivity and compassion. Pisces themes include following our ideals and inspirations; and being creative, visionary, dreamy and spiritual. During this lunation, it will be favorable to incorporate our spirituality, creativity and ideals into daily life. In March we will have another opportunity to focus on our relationships and finances when Venus turns retrograde. Blessings to all for harmony, peace and prosperity in 2009!
